You probably saw it on ABC-TV's 20/20, CBS-TV's 60 Minutes or other programs. People die needless and tragically because incompetent doctors made terrible mistakes.
Unfortunately, it's not a rare occurrence. A recent report estimates that medical mistakes kill almost 100,000 Americans each year, and cripple millions more.
This is more than all the people who die as a result of: Accidents/adverse effects (96,000), Pneumonia and influenza (86,000), Diabetes (63,000), Suicide (31,000), or Kidney disease (25,000) - and certainly far more than in automobile accidents, as the result of homicide or other crimes, AIDS, etc.
IN OTHER WORDS, YOU OR A FAMILY MEMBER ARE MORE LIKELY TO DIE FROM MEDICAL MISTAKES THAN FROM ACCIDENTS, CRIME, AND MOST MAJOR MEDICAL KILLERS!
What can YOU do to protect your self and your family. One thing -- the very first thing -- would be to check to see if any doctor you are now seeing or planning to see has been disciplined by the medical board of the state(s) where they practice medicine.
Previously, this has been difficult if not impossible for most people. But now that most states have put this life-saving information on the world wide web, anyone with an Internet connection can find it -- if only they know where to look.
Because this is so important, ASH presents a list of these web sites on another page, together with links where you can find even more information. Using this information could literally save YOUR life.
